Join us on July 16th in Santa Fe, NM at Railyard Performance Center, as we welcome Humlao Evans, offering “Dialogues from the Diaspora: Moving with the Elements:” Guests are welcome to arrive @ 9:00 am to open and warm up!

This workshop intricately weaves contemporary cultural arts practices designed to invite participants to delve deeply into their relationship with the environment, focusing specifically on the elements, both within our bodies and in the surrounding natural world.

Each session commences with a series of exercises aimed at fostering connection and articulation. These preliminary activities prime the body for fluid and efficient movement, laying the groundwork for the dance explorations that follow. As the offering progresses, participants transition into a series of guided movement meditations. Here, they are encouraged to explore a variety of movement qualities and intentions, all of which are inspired by the inherent characteristics of the Earthen Elements - their ease, weight, flow, and dynamics.

This offering is intentionally inclusive, inviting a diverse range of individuals - dancers, actors, artists, musicians, even those with no prior expressive movement experience but curious to explore their movement potential. It provides a unique opportunity to delve into the creative process, harnessing the rich potential that the environment, as a resource and metaphor, holds in our movement practices.

In exploring our connection to the natural elements and how we can harness their power for personal development. By embodying the unique qualities of each element, we can create a toolkit of somatic practices. These practices will help us understand both our internal resistances and the areas where we can expand. This will be achieved through movement, meditation and inquiry practices, promoting flexibility, adaptability and harmony within our individual systems.

Earth: Initiation

We will begin by connecting with the Earth element, grounding ourselves through gravity. This session focuses on the structural aspect of our bodies, exploring the deep relationship between our bones and the Earth. We will study the primal articulation of our joints and the vibrational instrument of our body construct.

Water: Liquidity

Transitioning from Earth's solidity, we delve into the dynamic fluidity that characterizes the Water element. Water adapts and changes form in response to gravitational pull, creating energy flows. These flows power our cellular, circulatory, immune, and digestive systems. We will explore the rhythms, pulses, and flows within our bodies, immersing ourselves in the vast sea of our inner fluids.

Air/Ether: Expansion

We will explore the Air element, focusing on the breath. Air represents lightness, directionality, and change. We will practice breathwork, leading us into the exploration of space. Space exists both within us and outside us, providing the canvas from which all other elements emerge. We will explore spatial orientation and our relationship with meditative practice, where all elements converge in a vast, harmonious field.

Fire: Luminosity

Fire represents the spark of intelligence and desire within us. We will ignite this inner fire, focusing on the transformational heat that powers digestion and action. This session will ride the waves of dynamic movement, created by the reverberating energy within us.

Humlao joins our Summer Celebration and offers this workshop as a peek into their creative process. They are joining a stellar group of International Artists offering a series of performance rituals to the community in honor of their practice, culture, and community, and in commemoration of 20 Years of Dancing Earth on July 20th.
