CALL FOR CREATIVES (“AUDITION” ) DANCING EARTH re-emerges into a blossoming of creativity in 2023 with an open call to dance artists for a new work being created by dream visioner/Creatrix Rulan Tangen (also known as Founding Artistic Director and Choreographer ). This spring, connecting with intriguing movers, we invite you to respond to a writing and video request, and/or participate in Summer Intensive June 1-12 at Cal State East Bay with international cultural artist ambassadors. This could be a good fit for those who - feel called by their intuition to the concept of “mixed-icism”
- who are involved in eco-oriented practices ( herbalists, hikers, tree huggers, seed planters, etc !),
- who have a commitment to an embodied practice as a significant aspect of their lives ( not necessarily studio based )
- who are interested in creating in many conditions: indoor, outdoor, self-directed, online, out of the box …
Including but not limited to: intergenerational, intercultural (ancestral lineage, and/or chosen families of culture ), non-binary, multilingual, trans-territorial, and others who have found themselves outside or beyond prescribed definitions. This process is most relevant and accessible to movers who are : - In the Bay Area, creating toward September 9th performance at Dance Mission Theater
- In the Palm Springs area, creating toward October performance
- In Santa Fe NM area, for an extended seasonal creative process

WHAT: participation in “RITUAL OF RE:MIX, An Eco-Elegy” Re-MIx explores the concept of mixed identity as a template for relation-building and adaptation in the age of climate crisis. Stemming from our body’s community-engaged knowledge-sourcing, we will develop a contemporary ritual beyond notions of the proscenium stage, with “mixed” collaborators. Through nuanced and complex corporeal experiences to explore Dancing Earth’s “mixed-icism”, the ideas of identity, race, nationality, worldview, ancestry, and religions will be deconstructed and expanded to look beyond the binary to cultivate an alternative to the dehumanizing, essentializing, and compartmentalizing of identity within wide view of ecological diversity as the source and living metaphor. Choreographically, this “re-mix” is rooted in Dancing Earth’s land-dance practice - blending magical realism while suspending time - while moving into a relationship with complex rhythms of urban settings. We will uncover specific forms of movement that are guided by forces of nature, emerging distinctive combinations of these elements as the liminal spaces of alchemy for transformation. The performance ritual will be at the center of an offering that includes artists facilitating a multi-sensory, multi-dimension, experience for the community, to activate space with love, pleasure, joy, and wellness. |
