Dancing Earth presents:
“Festejo” : Afro-Peruvian Dance Workshop
with Cynthia Paniagua
Sunday, July 14th
11:30 am - 1 pm
Railyards Performance Center: 1611 Paseo De Peralta, Santa Fe, NM 87501
Join us on July 14th in Santa Fe, NM at Railyards Performance Center, as we welcome Cynthia Paniagua, offering "Festejo" an Afro-Peruvian Dance that emerged from the coast of Peru.
This celebration is the representative dance of the black Creole originally from the Peruvian coast. The musical instrument for this dance was the cheque, or gourd which was later replaced with the Peruvian cajon, and the maraca with the donkey's jawbone, adding acoustic guitar and singing. It is traditionally practiced in the Lima and Ica regions, with the city of Lima and the districts of San Luis (Cañete) and El Carmen (Chincha) being the areas linked to this genre.
Cynthia returns to our Summer Celebration to create and collaborate, offering this workshop as a peek into her creative process. She is joining a stellar group of International Artists offering a series of performance rituals to the community in honor of their practice, culture, and community, and in commemoration of 20 Years of Dancing Earth on July 20th.
